Summer Blooms

It is heating up in the desert! I have been very surprised to find that in this heat, (we're flirting with 100 on a regular basis) there are many plants that wait until the heat starts to open their blossoms. These plants are surprisingly bright and do not seem to require any water for this to happen.

Does anyone know what these flowers are? I want to create a planter in my yard and I want to fill it with flowers that don't need any water and crave the sun. These plants line the freeways, so I figure this would be a good start.

Are they a type of Orchid? Scott got me some for Mother's Day and they look a lot like that, and they hardly require any water and it's still alive and kicking.
