1.) The soil out here is absolutely awful. I don't even really get weeds growing in some areas until I try to water my sunflowers and then the weeds will start to pop up a little bit.
2.) The wind. This wind is a wicked, wicked, wicked wind.
Do you see the devastation? The poor little things didn't really have much of a chance in the first place. They can't really get their roots down very deep because the dirt is so hard that you can't even dig with a shovel. If you think I'm kidding, come on over and give it a try. My little brother broke a shovel trying to dig a hole to put a tree in when we were putting in our sprinkler system last summer.
I have agonized over this problem for the past couple of weeks. I have even gone out and tried to steady my corn stalks with bamboo sticks I got at Wally World. The bamboo shoots haven't helped because I can't get them into the ground deep enough to make a difference.
Tuesday brought a horrible wind and when I got home from work all of my corn was horizontal instead of vertical. I have worked for the past couple of days trying to get them to stand up with the aid of bamboo shoots...but its only time before they die. How awful is that?
Luckily, I have one ear of corn growing right now. Hopefully, I can baby this stalk along enough that I can have at least one ear of sweet corn grown in my own garden to enjoy with some homemade salsa because believe me, my tomato plants are going c-r-a-z-y. Apparently they like the wind and crappy soil.
On another note, my cucumbers are going crazy as well. This little guy is just one of 15 that are beginning to grow. I am realizing that I may have planted too many of the little guys.....I think that I will be giving some away as I have no idea what to do with them other than put them in salads and on sandwiches.

I sympathize with both 1 & 2. Boo for Ivory leaving us with this for soil! Just know, you're doing much better than us. . . add a lack of sun from a too-tall house into the mix and it's really sad.
