Prank Calls 101

My past came rearing back up this weekend, you see one of my favorite pastimes once upon a time, was prank calling people. Before your imagination runs wild, I wasn't the Jerky Boys, but I'd like to think I was original. One of my best calls took place on a weekend night with my roommates and a few other friends. One of my friends had gone to BYU and since that was the case there was a pretty good chance I wouldn't know her friends. We decided to prank call a guy that she had been good friends with but had not talked to in a few years. My best character by far is "The Man" where I pretend like I am a dude and talk in the lowest voice possible. Which, in case you're wondering, sounds like someone who just might be having some digestion issues. During the course of our conversation I informed him that "he should run for President." Bless his heart, he was completely confused...good stuff, good times.

Well, last Friday night around 11:00 pm my phone starts ringing. These days I start getting nervous if I get a call that late because it might just be that a family member has been in an accident. I didn't make it to my phone in time and I didn't worry too much because I didn't recognize the number. But, I was left a message. The message sender was obviously a girl, speaking in a man's voice and she/he informed me that I should run for President. How wonderful is that? All of these years I have wished and hoped that I could have someone prank call me and there it was and I missed it!!!!!

I have been thinking about prank call etiquette and I'm not so sure there is a list out there in cyberspace. Well folks, today you're getting one. Before you start a prank call there are a few things to think about:

1.) You can tell a lot about someone by the way they react to a prank call. i.e. a proud person will not react well.
2.) There is a lot of planning involved, what are you going to say? How will you react? Do you have an ending or are you just planning on hanging up? Do you want this call to seem real or would you rather that it be an obvious prank?
3.) You should never be mean. Prank calling to make fun of someone = a big no-no.
4.) Once you've planned out all of your angles, make sure you know your story. It can get confusing for the prankee if you keep doubling back.
5.) Last of all, you should be having fun, if you're not, you're doing it for the wrong reasons.

Well my prank caller on Friday night, I know who you are and I commend you! You go girl! I'm just sayin' perhaps we should have another night prank calls like the old days......
